Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of death in Nigeria, with a significant burden noted in northern states such as Gombe. Public awareness and proactive management are critical components in the prevention and early detection of heart-related conditions. Nurse-led heart health campaigns have emerged as an effective strategy to promote cardiovascular health by increasing community awareness, encouraging preventive behaviors, and facilitating early diagnosis. These campaigns typically involve mass health education, screening services, and interactive sessions that empower community members with essential knowledge about heart health (Abubakar et al., 2023).
In Gombe State, where healthcare resources are often stretched and preventive health services are limited, nurse-led campaigns can play a pivotal role in bridging the information gap. Nurses, by virtue of their close community ties and trustworthiness, are ideally suited to lead these campaigns. They can provide culturally sensitive education and tailor messages to address the specific needs of the local population. This comprehensive approach not only helps in reducing the prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and smoking but also encourages early medical intervention.
Furthermore, these campaigns contribute to building sustainable health practices by engaging local leaders and using community platforms to disseminate information. The long-term goal is to reduce the incidence of heart disease by fostering a community environment that values preventive care. This study aims to assess the overall impact of nurse-led heart health campaigns in Gombe State, focusing on their effectiveness in increasing awareness, changing health behaviors, and improving early detection of cardiovascular risk factors.
Despite the well-documented benefits of heart health campaigns, many communities in Gombe State continue to experience high rates of cardiovascular diseases. A lack of awareness about risk factors and preventive measures contributes to delayed diagnoses and inadequate management of heart conditions (Suleiman & Musa, 2024). Although nurse-led campaigns have been initiated in various parts of the state, there is limited empirical data on their overall effectiveness. Many campaigns suffer from inconsistent implementation, inadequate funding, and insufficient follow-up, which diminish their potential impact.
This study addresses the need to evaluate whether these campaigns are achieving their intended outcomes. Specifically, it will examine the extent to which nurse-led interventions have increased community knowledge about heart health, motivated lifestyle changes, and facilitated early detection of cardiovascular risks. Without a thorough evaluation, it is challenging to refine these programs and allocate resources effectively. By identifying strengths and weaknesses in the current approach, this research seeks to offer actionable recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of heart health campaigns in Gombe State.
The study will focus on communities in Gombe State where nurse-led heart health campaigns have been implemented. Data will be collected through community surveys, focus group discussions, and campaign performance metrics. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data, variable campaign intensity across communities, and external factors such as cultural practices that may influence health behaviors.
